Director - Dr Terence Chong

Terence’s training began with Science. He delved into the mechanics of life when he had the opportunity to study biology, and discovered phenomena ranging from the diversity of the microbial worlds to the rational organization of genes. After graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Biology from the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (Singapore), he went on to study life at the macro-level, and worked at bringing people together for productive technological enterprises.

By then, he knew that you learn best by doing. Spending his next chapter with the National Science and Technology Board (NSTB), Terence learned how to effect holistic infrastructure development at the national level, working initially on the Clinical Research Sector by focusing on developing Good Clinical Practice capabilities, then identifying new initiatives to enhance ’s technological engagement. Focusing on entrepreneurship, Terence worked on initiatives to engage the global Venture Capital communities. After spending four and a half years in the San Francisco Bay Area, home to Biotech Bay and Silicon Valley , he returned with an appreciation for the agility, tolerance of failure, and encouragement of creative disruption - factors fuelling innovative ventures - which he had seen there. He counts himself fortunate to have ridden a boom and bust cycle in the growth and collapse of the Internet bubble, and has seen the necessity for ideas to be firmly grounded before they could take root. After this experience, Terence remains a student of Science; perhaps more so than before. His believe in learning by doing deepened and delights in seeing innovation operate in the spheres of administration and management.

He took this to the School of Applied Science ( SAS ) at the Republic Polytechnic and deliberately worked innovation into the school’s fabric - an imperative because the journey ahead is uncertain and because the unbeaten path is likely the one to see us through. The SAS grew from 200 students in its first intake to taking in 800+ at its 6th intake. With solid curricula programmes, synergistic technological initiatives and a pragmatic open culture, SAS looks to challenge itself further to take it to greater variety and diversity.

Terence hopes he will be able to continue to kindle this “can do” attitude in up-coming generations, and seeks to share this journey with kindred spirits.
