International Student Club – I Star Event 2009
The International Star (I-Star) is an annual singing competition organised by the International Student Club (ISC) which offers a platform for international students in Republic Polytechnic (RP) to showcase their talents. This competition helps to improve participants’ self-confidence and communication skills. Moreover, it provides opportunities for cultural awareness and exchanges between the international students and their Singaporean friends.
The I-Star is a month-long event started on 20 July and ended with a grand finale on 7 August 2009. It attracted close to a hundred wannabes singers to the first audition. To read about the winners and view exciting videos of the competition, please click on this link.

International Students with Part-Time Jobs Achievement
Are international students allowed to work part-time during their course of study at RP? The answer is yes but the students must adhere to the guidelines stated by the Ministry of Manpower, Singapore. During school vacation, international students registered at Republic Polytechnic on a full-time diploma course and are above 14 year-old, are allowed to work without a valid Work Pass. They are allowed to work during school term for not more than 16 hours a week. More details on the rules and regulations on the part-time employment for international students can be found on Ministry of Manpower’s website.
Besides following the Ministry of Manpower’s guidelines, international students must be disciplined enough to balance their time between school work and their part-time job. In this issue, we would like to feature an international student who manage to juggle his academic work, school activities and a part-time job. Dennis Loi Jiun Ming, a third year School of Hospitality student, came to Singapore from Sabah to pursue Diploma in Integrated Events Management. Dennis has scored a high Grade Point Average of 3.68/4.00 in academic year 2008. He is also an active participant in many school events such as Republic Polytechnic Wind Symphony, Singapore International Band festival, International Student Club I-star singing competition and JIVE Fiesta 2008. In addition, he is working as a part-time Disc Jockey (DJ) with local Chinese radio station, 100.3FM. How did he manage to perform all these activities well?
The key to his success lies in Dennis’ good time management skills. “My weekdays are reserved for school work, whether it’s attending lessons, working on my assignments or preparing for my final-year projects and interest group gatherings,” he shares. Dennis makes sure he does not neglect his studies or student activities while having a part-time job. He revealed that RP’s problem based learning (PBL) system has given him many opportunities to showcase his creativity in his studies, planning student events, and working as a part-time DJ. He is certainly enjoying a fulfilling student life in RP and in Singapore.
